Old Silver’s boots
“I orginally wrote this song about my grandfather, whose nickname was “Old Silver.” The song is a cross between an Irish murder ballad and a Western movie–my grandfathder was a great storyteller, and could hold any kid’s attention around a campfire. I still have his boots, which I mentioned in the song.
When I wrote this song, I didn’t yet know any alternate tunings. On this version, I used DADGAD, a great Irish tuning. I thought if I lowered the key, and lowered the tuning, it would get even more mournful and help tell the story better.” — Radney
