“I wrote this song with Jon Randall Stewart and Darden Smith about six weeks before we were going to record. I had the song title for years. My dad’s name was John Radney, so he was John R and of course Johnny Cash was John R. Cash. I always thought I’d write it myself, but there I sat with Jon R. Stewart, and told the guys, “Well, this is what we need to write about today.”
The song is about a guy leaving a relationship and leaving everything behind. While it is about the sadness of leaving an old relationship, it’s also about the freedom of starting a new life. He leaves with nothing but his guitar and Johnny Cash on the radio.
I wasn’t even thinking about this being the extra song for this record, but after it was written, it kept haunting me. I was so happy with the way it turned out, and I think it fits this record perfectly.”
